The Perks Of Plastic Molding

by Claude Walters

Most hardware stores sell wood or MDF (medium density fiber board) for moldings. Of course, wood is a cheap product and fairly practical for a number of reasons. Most importantly, it can be painted any color. However, there are many big disadvantages to using wooden molding. This is why many hardware stores are starting to sell plastic molding. Plastic molding are becoming more and more common, and available in more diverse styles. This article explains the main drawbacks of wooden molding and introduces some of the best perks of plastic molding.

Plastic is Waterproof and Stays That Way

The simple fact that plastic is waterproof gives it many big advantages over wooden molding. Wood and MDF are far from waterproof. This is why they need to painstakingly sealed and painted to protect them. If your wood molding gets wet, it can warp, swell and lead to deterioration. Fixing waterlogged wooden molding is a pain. You need to get out the power sander, use wood putty to fill the holes, prime the wood, and then paint it. Over the years, especially if your wooden molding is installed in an exterior setting, you will waste a lot of time and money trying to maintain it.

Plastic is waterproof, you don't need to worry about it getting damaged by water. Even if plastic molding is fully submerged in water for long period of time, the structure will not change.

Plastic Does Not Need to Be Painted (But It Can Be)

As mentioned, some people prefer wood because it can be painted. But this is not necessarily an advantage if you aren't interested in changing your molding color. The fact of the matter is, wood needs to painted frequently to protect it from water damage. Plastic molding is dyed, so it is largely paint and chip resistant. If your molding does get scratch, the color change will be almost imperceptible in the scratch will be much less visible than it would be on wood. It should also be mentioned that plastic can be painted as well. However, plastic does not look great when you paint with traditional paintbrushes. The only way to effectively paint plastic molding is to use a pneumatic spray gun. This creates a much smoother and more consistent finish.

As you can see, there are many practical reasons for choosing plastic molding. You will also be surprised how many great colors and styles it comes in. Check out a hardware store like O L Willard Co for more information.
